Meet The Cast #7

Hmmm, no prizes for guessing who this is based on. We think he's really funny especially when he's affecting a stereotypical French accent... Just wait until he falls in love... OOPS spoilers that's in 'City of Tomorrow'!!

Next time- Meet the cast #8

Meet The Cast #4

Yay, it's the Bar-Thing, AKA B-T. One day and his friend go on a date with two buxom babes to see the latest Star Wars film (episode 257 or something) while being chased by a very mad fellow who's after Fred.

Please note... this story was written in the early 2000s years before I'd even heard of the real life comic creator Chip Zdarsky, so B-T's friend has been renamed, ahem... Plop Stardrive!!

This is a model of the Bar-Thing that I made in the early 2000s, partly for fun, but also as a drawing reference... Also I like the idea that his eye stalks can move independently of each other like the ears of a cat, so he can look in two directions at once.

Meet The Cast #3

Lance will also be appearing in his own story entitled 'Oh, Bloody Hell!'. I might leave it as it is because I'm very pleased with how the story works. It was scripted by me, pencilled by John Woolley and inked by me. It's structured as a flashback as Lance, in the bar with Fred tells him of the horror he's just suffered as a nasty government official audits his life!! Like all these storeis it won't be appearing until after 'City of Tomorrow'.

Meet The Cast #2

One thing I wanted to do was give each character their own stand alone story or two that gives them a chance to shine and develop a bit while still being part of the overall narrative direction. It's not scripted yet but Daisy's first is called 'Bra Wars'.

Meet The Cast #1

These cast profiles were originally in the issue #0 special preview issue of Fred Fortune (link to where you can buy it below) of the most recent series. #s 0-3 are available and issues 1-4 of Fred Fortune: Gold, a series that collects the really old strips from the early 1990s. Bear in mind that the stories that appear in 0-3 will be reworked and form part of the ongoing narrative that follows the forthcoming 'City of Tomorrow' story line, but if you don't mind spoilers please feel free. I'll be reworking most of them to fit the narrative. Also several of the stories in those issues were drawn by old Mondo* legend and all round good bloke Mr. John Woolley, who has since retired from drawing, so I will be drawing new art for all of them. This is by necessity rather than design because unfortunately I had a digital disaster a couple of years ago when the external hard drive that stored ALL of the Fred files decided to give up the ghost and break down on me and it was lost. I had one issue saved on Dropbox and a few low res back ups here and there, but not enough to continue as was originally planned. Luckily most of Fred was drawn traditionally so it has mostly been re-scanned... the oldest strips needing the most TLC to tidy up to a printable standard. Around 50 pages were lost completely, mostly ones that were digitally inked. Still have the traditional pencils though. A stupid mistake that won't be repeated. It feels like starting again from scratch so some jiggling of stories was required to get back on track. Mr Woolley will of course still be credited and will get a cheque for those stories if enough funds are raised.

*Mondo- The UK small press anthology comic where Fred was first published in 1993 which up to 2004. It still has a Facebook page here-

Here We Go- Welcome to Funky Punk Comics

First off I hope everyone is coping okay with the current unprecedented situation. Stay safe and spare a thought for key workers the world over at every level who are on the front line of the pandemic. We'll get through it and good health to all.

Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to have a look at the first post of the Funky Punk Comics blog which will be the new home for my Fred Fortune comic.

Fred is a fun loving free spirit of the future who likes nothing better than lots of beer, his friends, a good curry, lots of beer, his flying car and... ahem... lots of beer. He lives by his wits and is always getting into scrapes that he usually embraces with a cheery grin and a song in his heart. And there's car chases... lots and lots of car chases.

The story is set in roughly 1000 years time in the city of Imperium, nicknamed 'Shitty City'. The city was once the proud capital of Earth's Solar Empire, but after 500 years of galactic war it has fallen into disrepair and squalor, it's mile high towers long since past their prime and the lower levels are dark with a nasty dank whiff in the polluted air.

The first new Fred story, entitled 'City of Tomorrow', will be divided into three or four 40-50 page graphic novels that will  be crowdfunded. In the story the city is invaded and taken over by the mad evil pirate King Lord Tim Timminy-Tim-Timminy-Timtim-Terry (!)

So far the first forty or so pages are scripted, with the first twenty being pencilled and the first two are completed bar the lettering. I hope you'll join us as Fred's new chapter begins...

Here's a quick sequence from the Fred animation that was part of an old college project back in the 90s... It is a short two minute cartoon that was all done traditionally- hundreds of hand drawn acetate cells and eighteen painted backgrounds, filmed on high band video- it was done before digital animation. As I don't have a video copy that could be digitised I have scanned all the cells and backgrounds and will be remaking it digitally. As soon as it's done it will be posted on YouTube.
