Woolley Jumper #8

It's Woolley Jumper time again, this week part one of 'The Citadel of Silence' bursts onto your screens with lots of dynamic triangle panels and crazy action. It originally appeared in #18 of Mondo, the first issue of 1994.Sporting an amazing biker/metal cover from Tom Carney, also below, the issue featured 'The Hitman' by Lee Davis and Mike Kinsella- a strip I've earmarked for restoring and colouring to be republished at some point. My own Fred Fortune in a story entitled 'The Dull Day' where Fred is so bored he walks out of his own strip in disgust(!). Part 8 of 'Copter Cops' by Matt Banwell and Noel White, a strip that started in one of the missing issues. If anyone out their has any stray copies of Mondo #s 1-5 (1992), 8, 9 & 10 (1993), 33 (April 1995), and 37 (August 1995) please drop us a line so we can return them to the Mondo archive. We'll get them scanned and straight back to you ASAP with a gift of some sort. Also in #18 was Negative Man scripted again by Matt Banwell with art by Chris Doughty. A prose article by Mark Yarwood about the Noir genre called 'Hard Boiled'. Mark is now a crime author with a huge stack of books to his name... check them out on Amazon if you like. You can also find Mark on Twitter @MarkYarwood72. Next Lee Davis and Paco Garcia's epic superhero sequel 'Hyperion II' continued as did 'Man XL' also written by Lee Davis with art by Steve Jones. The issue was capped with a few pin-up pieces including a very Schwarzenegger like rendition of the 'British Bulldog' character by Cavan Ark.

Woolley Jumper #6

The first post of 2021, sorry we're late. Thought we'd kick things off with the next comic from John Woolley's Massacre Comix, which has now morphed into 'Murkle Yarns'. This one first appeared in Mondo #16 from November 1994 which featured a stonking cover from Steven Corps. This is Part One of (putting on best over the top movie trailer voice!) 'Garbage Can Killer'! As always, presented as is scanned straight from the photocopied Mondo pages with no tidy ups... Expect the cleaned colour Ultra HD remix of this stuff along with the new material coming soon...

And just for the hell of it here's the bonus feature- the cover of Mondo #16....

Art- Ade Hughes- currently working on Pat Mills' 'Spacewarp' comic.

Famous for his flaming sword years before Game of Thrones, Lee Davis' The Gladiator, and his post apocalyptic world graced the pages of Mondo from the start in several stories drawn by several different artists. It's currently running as a newspaper style strip, along with several others as 'Champion of Forever' on the MondoToons Facebook page.

The Great Funky Punk Thingamebobs!

For anyone who is interested, Mondo- Britain's Best Comic! now has it's own Twitter account. Hope to see you there for lots of fun comics stuff.

Hope to see you there.
Drawing stuff today...

Here's a random design for the Anytown comic. He's not a particular character, but was drawn to get the feel of the story. If memory serves, one of the stories was set in a particularly unsuccessful evening in Anytown's only nightclub. It looks very 90s to me so the style of the new version might differ somewhat and I'm don't know yet if I'll revisit the nightclub plot. I'll have to find the old sketchbook it's in and give it an objective look.

At the moment there are 36 newspaper style Anytown strips from the early 2000s with another 30 or so scripted with several different plot threads running. At the time it did appear on my very early site Sillyarts (now long gone) in black and white. Here's an example-

There's also the script for one big mockumentary style story that could be expanded into a graphic novel. The story is a comedy all about the Grey family living their ordinary lives in an ordinary suburban town. Mum, dad and their three offspring but it mostly focuses on the older son, Gavin Grey, who is around 20 and wants to be a music star with his metal band Beneath Contempt, the only problem is Gavin and his mates have no talent or ability.

Here's another Anytown nightclub punter.

They were both drawn traditionally with Indian ink. I'm itching to get back to drawing traditionally, so I think I'll be doing Anytown on real paper. Would you like to see an Anytown book? I've got my dip pens and bottle of ink on standby, let's dig out that old script...

You know what this lady needs..? A new tote bag adorned with the fantastic front cover of Fred Fortune #1 to keep all her comics and stuff in.
Lucky there's one for sale on the Funky Punk Teespring store. Link below-
You can also buy the comic to keep in it, still on sale on Comic Flea Market, link further below.

Thanks for looking.

Woolley Jumper #2

This week Mondo legend, John Woolley is back! His crazed cartooning graced Mondo's pages from the beginning right the way through to 2004 with his unique cartoon style. Mostly known for his superhero parody strips Massacre Comix, later changed to Murkle Yarns. He also did art for other Mondo stories such as Lord Thunder and inks on Gladiator and Fred Fortune. John is not online and in our last correspondence told me that he is retiring from small press comics as he's 60 and finding it increasingly difficult given his disability which is understandable, but is still a shame. Most recently he drew several Fred Fortune strips including 'The Sirius Job' and 'Hooray For Hollyworld'. You can read 'The Sirius Job' in Fred #s 2 and 3 (link below). They will all be reworked to appear at some point after the upcoming 'City of Tomorrow'. But his stuff will not be forgotten as we have his Mondo collaborations, 60+ pages of his own stuff and 5 complete issues of Murkle Yarns which will see the light of day at some point.
So here is Part One of a two part Massacre Comix story which originally saw print in Mondo #12, in July 1993. As last time the pages are scanned as is and haven't been tidied up. Don't worry- that's coming with added colour. Watch this space...

Way Back When #2

My comic character Fred Fortune first started appearing in North London Comics' small press anthology comic Mondo (Britain's Best Comic!) in the January 1993 issue and stayed there until Mondo went into it's extended hiatus after 60+ issues at the end of 2004. Mondo was unique among the UK small press comics of the time being one of the few titles that stuck to a regular monthly schedule and it was for the most part filled with light hearted action adventure superhero stories rather than the more introspective darker norm of the Brit small press at the time. It's creator/editor and lead writer Lee Davis often refers to it as the party on the page! Fred being a fast paced cartoony sci-fi comedy filled with flying car chases and a lot of beer set against the backdrop of a decaying post industrial future city fitted in well with Mondo's approach and became one of the regular strips.

So by 1994 I had accumulated enough Fred material to fill a few issues of my own so that summer Fred was collected into his own three issue mini series. Here are the covers for those issues.

Each comic was 20 black and white A5 pages behind a b+w cover copied onto coloured paper- standard practice in the small press back then. The small A5 page size meant that some of the artwork's impact was lost because it was mostly drawn on A3.

By 1994 Fred had evolved from one page gag strips to multi page and multi episode stories and the last story in this phase was the seven episode 'Daze' which introduced Fred's girlfriend Daisy. This story was collected as a one shot issue shortly before I went off to art college in 1995.

Originally a second three issue mini series would have been published at some point in 1996, but circumstances meant that it was put on hold and stories that would have appeared there remain unfinished (though the best ideas in those stories have been integrated into the new stuff, coming soon...). This is the cover for the second issue of that series- the cover for the first issue was drawn too, but has been lost in the mists of time. It's from late 1995 and all the lettering was hand drawn on the artwork.
Also in late 1995 Mondo morphed and relaunched as Equinox which lasted until Lee changed it back to Mondo in 1999.

While at college I took the opportunity to rework the design of the city giving it it's own distinct look and character, so it was not just another Blade Runner, Mega City One knock off.

These are a couple of the earliest sketches of the new look city. Inspired by the look of the huge industrial chemical plant that was near Middlesborough in the north east of England where I was at college I wanted the new look city to be different to the futuristic New York tower block trope, but also a bit more grounded than Carlos Ezquerra or Mick McMahon's amazing Mega City One designs in 2000AD. So I made my city's towers cylindrical with lots of pipes and walkways curling round them with lots of signage and floating streetlights.
The sketch above was later reworked and painted in acrylics to become one of the backgrounds in a very short Fred Fortune animation which might be coming to YouTube at some point, if I can make the time to finish the digital version.

Mondo is still around in the form of a Facebook page where you will find a lot of art and jokes. Some comics from it's pages have been restored and presented in colour for the first time so please feel free to check it out. Hopefully at some point we will be able to do a new printed edition...

Next time- The Hungry Shopper!

Stay safe everyone.
