Mondominium #3!!

Here's a selection of old Mondo covers for you... This is the cover of the first issue I read by one A.Davies. I don't have copies of #s1-5 and Lee didn't keep any, so if anyone seeing this has those issues please drop us a line, we'd love them back in the Mondo archive. We'll scan them then get them straight back to you. Other missing issues are #s 8, 9 and 10, #33, and #37 of Mondo's first run.

The Christmas 1993 issue was Mondo's first colour cover and featured the epic death of British Bulldog story, aping DC's Death of Superman which was running at the time. This issue also came with a free gift, as a lot of UK comics did at the time to boost sales. Usually stickers, bubblegum or plastic space spinner toys, here we had free tissues for mourners to have a good cry at the loss of the fallen hero! Art by Nick Raybould.

Issue 25 (August 1994) was by the late Hadyn Walker marked the start of his and Lee Davis' post apocalyptic adventure strip 'Garrison's Blade'

Another Mondo legend made his debut in Issue 41 in 1999. Known for his very precise line work cartoonist BJ Wilson had been around the small press scene since the 80s. His 'Iron Ed' story was serialised and quickly became the comic's go to strip with it's very English take on the 70s Heavy Metal style.'Iron Ed' and BJ are Mondo MUST HAVES. If you use Kindle unlimited you can read 'Iron Ed' in all it's glory here-

It's follow up 'Assault Suit Kevin' would come later. Personally speaking I think BJs amazing artwork would benefit from some colour. Perhaps that French/Moebius/Asterix etc style... Watch this space if you'd like to see something like that...

Mondominium #1

I thought I'd showcase some more old Mondo stuff for you... From #21 back in April 1994, here's part one of 'The Gladiator III'. It was written by Mondo's head honcho creator Lee Davis and drawn by a pre-2000AD Tom Carney who was out-Bisleying everyone at the time!! As with our 'Woolley Jumper' series the pages are presented warts and all scans from the photocopied pages of my old copies of Mondo. Watch this space for news about the restored and coloured versions, like the 'Revenant' story from a while back, coming soon... Maybe as a new Mondo special..? What do you think?

Space Babe Part Two- Painty Boobs!

Caution- This comic contains boobies, has an offensive sense of humour and is toxically masculine!!

'This better not be prawn!!'

Here's the original first four painted pages of last week's Space Babe strip. They are scanned as is and unaltered, except as I have an A4 scanner, each page was scanned in two halves and pasted together with a few tidy ups to eliminate blurs and line up the two halves. They were originally painted in acrylics on A3 Bristol board then finished with Indian ink line work on top with a bit of coloured pencil here and there. They were tucked away in an old portfolio case and this is the first time I've seen them in about ten years. I think they still look good, especially the all the blue tones in the space backgrounds. I think if I ever went back to the character I'd like to use the same technique.

The next piece was done as a cover image for the 2007 black and white version. It was drawn traditionally in Indian ink and coloured digitally. Unfortunately it was one of the artworks that fell victim to the hard drive disaster a couple of years ago and was lost along with loads of other stuff. This is a scan of a print of it that I found in the same portfolio as the original painted pages, hence the grainy texture. The colours of the original version are more natural than this one. It was used on one of the old Daily Doodles I used to do on the Mondo Facebook page, Doodle #245, I put the logo across her boobs so as not to attract unwanted cancellation, but you can still find it in the photo bit here-

Fed up of Hollywood celebrities telling you what to think and how to live your lives when it's none of their business and they do the opposite? Sick and tired of being preached to by stupid people who they are better than you and that you owe them a living just because they are famous? If you're mad as hell and you're not gonna take it any more, cut the rich and famous down to size with these fetching T-shirts and other merch from the Funky Punk Teespring and Redbubble stores, links below.

Space Babe Part One- Soft Core Sci-Fi!!

Caution- This comic contains boobies, has an offensive sense of humour and is toxically masculine!!

This is a story from way back around the turn of the millennium. Initially it was to be a full colour painted strip of which I completed the first four pages in acrylics and Indian ink. If I recall the I was going to submit it to Heavy Metal and had planned an epic plot to save Trixie's home planet. It was also an excuse to draw lots of sexy sci-fi women and was quite spontaneously scripted and fun  to do. The four finished pages appeared in a later 2001 issue of Mondo as a first episode. I quite liked how the black and white photocopied pages showed the tones which later gave me the idea to do this 2007 version. At the time I wanted to get this story finished and was trying to get to grips with digital art so I used this to play around in Photoshop, though the line art was all done traditionally.

There you go. What did you think? Would you like to see more of the Space Babe?

Doodle of the Doctor #2

#RIPDrWho

Here's the second Doctor. For some reason I found that it's a lot easier to capture Patrick Troughton's likeness than William Hartnell. Another idea Lee and I had years ago was to do comic adaptations of the Doctor's TV adventures, particularly the missing ones. We were gonna do them as webcomics then collect each story into graphic novels. Dunno if the beeb would ever have let us do it as it never developed that far. What do you think of the idea? Imagine a 100+ page graphic novel of Marco Polo or The Abominable Snowmen...

Doodle of the Doctor #1

#RIPDrWho

Growing up in the UK I always loved Doctor Who. My earliest memories of it are the later stories in Jon Pertwee's final series and 'my Doctor' is Tom Baker's 4th Doctor. I don't remember hiding behind the sofa, but I'm sure I must have done at some point. Later my interest in the Doctor fizzled out during the 5th Doctor's time as I got into other things.

I watched some of the late 90s repeats on UK Gold, and particularly remember the 1st Doctor story The Romans late one Friday night while I was drawing Fred in the London flat we rented at the time and the 4th Doctor classic Genesis of the Daleks very early one Saturday morning. If I remember right they used to show a complete Doctor Who adventure followed by two episodes of Blake's 7- another classic... I'd love to do a comic version of Blake's 7.
When it came back in 2005 I started watching it regularly again and really enjoyed the new version, the peak for me being Matt Smith's 11th Doctor.

Just before the 12th Doctor regenerated into the 13th and derailed the show with it's very boring and poorly written scripts, drab monsters, infantile 'let's talk to the audience like they are toddlers' jokes and pretentious condescending preaching, I toyed with the idea of doing a story to send as an art submission to Titan Comics who currently hold the license for Doctor Who comics. I wanted it to feature every Doctor to best show off my art, storytelling skills and understanding of Doctor Who lore. So I devised a plot to feature all the Doctors, their companions and quite a few of the more popular villains. It is  entitled 'The Nexus Trap!' and is suitably set in a quarry on a cold far away planet during the Time War of the modern series. I wasn't sure if I'd be able to do a good job scripting it so I pitched the idea to my friend and cohort Lee Davis to write it. It was obvious that such a story couldn't be told in a five page art submission, so we decided to break it down into three five or six page episodes. Lee scripted the first episode and then series 11 with the 13th Doctor aired and my interest kinda fizzled out because it was such a bland mess (the show- not Lee's script or our comic ideas). I did do some sketches of the Doctors to get a feel for them and see how I could capture their likenesses, but I still haven't started drawing part one of 'The Nexus Trap'.

What do you think? Should I go ahead and draw it anyway? Should we still pitch it to Titan? I probably wouldn't be allowed to draw any 13th Doctor comics even if Titan liked my artwork,  because (rolls eyes to the heavens in despair) I'm not female, but I'd give my left arm (I'm right handed) for the chance of me and Lee to do a 3rd or 4th Doctor adventure. Or we could just do it and post it here and on social media? Would it make any Who fans out there feel a bit better after the wilful  destruction of the longest running and most beloved genre franchises?

Here's a sketch of the real first Doctor and Susan to wet your appetite. It's a traditional pencil drawing tidied up digitally. Let me know what you think in the comments below.

This one is an unaltered sketchbook page no pencils all drawing pens...
