Mondominium #3!!

Here's a selection of old Mondo covers for you... This is the cover of the first issue I read by one A.Davies. I don't have copies of #s1-5 and Lee didn't keep any, so if anyone seeing this has those issues please drop us a line, we'd love them back in the Mondo archive. We'll scan them then get them straight back to you. Other missing issues are #s 8, 9 and 10, #33, and #37 of Mondo's first run.

The Christmas 1993 issue was Mondo's first colour cover and featured the epic death of British Bulldog story, aping DC's Death of Superman which was running at the time. This issue also came with a free gift, as a lot of UK comics did at the time to boost sales. Usually stickers, bubblegum or plastic space spinner toys, here we had free tissues for mourners to have a good cry at the loss of the fallen hero! Art by Nick Raybould.

Issue 25 (August 1994) was by the late Hadyn Walker marked the start of his and Lee Davis' post apocalyptic adventure strip 'Garrison's Blade'

Another Mondo legend made his debut in Issue 41 in 1999. Known for his very precise line work cartoonist BJ Wilson had been around the small press scene since the 80s. His 'Iron Ed' story was serialised and quickly became the comic's go to strip with it's very English take on the 70s Heavy Metal style.'Iron Ed' and BJ are Mondo MUST HAVES. If you use Kindle unlimited you can read 'Iron Ed' in all it's glory here-

It's follow up 'Assault Suit Kevin' would come later. Personally speaking I think BJs amazing artwork would benefit from some colour. Perhaps that French/Moebius/Asterix etc style... Watch this space if you'd like to see something like that...

The Third Dimension

Years ago I played around with the idea of seeing if I could create some 3D artwork.
This was to be traditional pulp 1950s blue/red anaglyph 3D. I used some random images just to see if I could do it. I thought maybe one day I could do a whole 3D comic, but I don't know if there is anyone out there who would buy one... Of course it would ahve to be some sort of pulpy Flash Gordon/space monster type story. Perhaps a short 3D mini comic as a stretch goal or add on on a future project might be an option. What do you think? Is it something you might be interested in?

Building Blocks 4

Here's some more architectural sketchbook studies for you...

This first one is an A5 pen and ink that was done in the mid 90s to have a go at showing moody atmosphere with light and shadow.

Next up we have a very exaggerated extreme depiction of the 'Crooked House' in Windsor near where I grew up. It's quite the tourist attraction, was built in 1687 and is the oldest teahouse in England. It was done with watercolour and pen and ink in the late 90s.

And finally we have this shopping mall design... Mid 90s again it was going to be part of my 'Anytown' story which has had several incarnations over the years. Essentially it was going to be a satirical swipe at UK suburban life told through the eyes of the Grey family. This design was very early on, early/mid 90s, and would have featured an elite class of superheroes who only cared about their celebrity. I ditched the superhero side of it and it became newspaper style strip focusing on the older son of the Greys and his terrible amateur metal band, Beneath Contempt. I wrote about 70 strips and drew 36 of them that were showcased on a very early now long gone website, SillyArts around 2001. Then around 2007 I scripted a whole comic book format story that has yet to see the light of day. Still focusing on satire and the Grey family it was about the daughter's birthday told in a kind of comic mockumentary style if that makes sense. I still like the idea and might have to work up a more up to date draft of the script and do it as an OGN. Also I quite fancy the idea of restoring, colouring and finishing off the newspaper style version, though some of the jokes will be very out of date now...

A satirical graphic novel...
Coming soon...
