Digital Stuff & Nonsense Too

Like last time this one is a practise with digital colour only here instead of using watercolour brushes I've used a standard inking pen and the blending tool to smooth the edges. The results are just as good and it was fun to do, but I think I prefer using the watercolour brushes. They felt more 'real' and it seemed to be a faster process.

The next one a sketchbook page from around the turn of the millennium. It's a character design for a comic called 'Reality Check' which was going to feature a squad of 'Reality Police' in a world where fictional characters and monsters etc spill out into reality in a fun action comedy. I envisaged lots of dinosaurs, aliens and pirates invading modern day suburbia. I like the idea so I might revisit it at some point. I reckon I can get two or three graphic novels out of it!

Here's an old Fred one-pager from the heady days of 1991. The original art was drawn on A3 paper. This page has been tidied up and re-lettered digitally. I've tried not to correct all the obvious mistakes as it reflects my abilities of the time. The old Fred's could be collected again at some point, maybe as a one shot book or for free as a digital collection. What do you think? Would you like to read more old Fred online?

Just enough room to plug some cguk books. Check out Mortal Worlds by Double Vision Comics- A supersoldier discovers that man's first ancestor is our final descendant-a being of ultimate evil. Look at the art on the cover!

Here comes Phantom Volume 1 by Peephole Circus- Step into a dreamlike world of creepy characters and nightmares with the art book PHANTOM!

If zombies are your thing here's Doomsday Kingdom by LovePigeon A zombie story with heart and guts... lots of them! 128 PAGES!

CGUK- All the best comics without the gate keeping, screechy preaching, petty squabbles or drab art in Marvel... You know... real comics.

Next Time- Something Something Chicken Curry and Beer

Stay safe everyone.

Coming Soon- Fred Fortune : City of Tomorrow

Digital Stuff & Nonsense

Here's a quick digital painting that I did to learn the technique. It was done in Clip Studio with watercolour brushes and took roughly four hours to do. It's the first time I've used those brushes and I'm quite pleased with it. It's a steep learning curve and I'm more used to working in colour traditionally.

Next is a completed panel from Fred Fortune- City of Tomorrow. As you can see it's very dense, this isn't to visually overwhelm the reader but to reflect the intense claustrophobic nature of the future city. I think it's really effective and I'm loving doing it. For the eagle eyed amongst you in the background you will find R2D2, the Tardis and a Dalek. This one is part of the establishing scenes in the first couple of pages. Each panel is taking hours and hours to do with multiple layers and textures, greys and rain. At the time of this writing I'm doing the tone work on page 4, so it'll be a while yet before it's ready to go. Let me know what you think. I'll be posting regular updates etc so watch this space...

Just enough time to remind you that the Teespring and Redbubble stores have lots of nice Funky Punk stuff for you to enjoy so if you've got a spare few minutes to have a look I would really appreciate it. Links down below. Thanks.

Next Time- More stuff and nonsense!

Stay safe everyone.

Down The YouTube.

I do have a minuscule YouTube channel with some drawing videos and plan on doing some more stuff for it so watch this space for updates as and when. Here are the videos that are on there now...

This is the latest one-

Here's an older Fred one-

This one is tidying up and finishing the Xmas illustration for 2016. I've been doing Christmas artworks every year since 2012 to post on social media (mostly Facebook). My Dad, who was a graphic designer and painter used to design and print his own Christmas cards for his clients and friends and family and I wanted to carry on the tradition but in a modern way.

Here are a couple of my Dad's Xmas cards. It's not Christmas at the time of writing, but what the hell. The first one is a lino-cut print and dates from the early 1970s-

I love this one. Can you tell that it was inspired by the BBCs I,Claudius which was originally broadcast in 1976?

Next Time- Doodle of the Doctor.

Stay safe everyone.

Coming Soon- Fred Fortune : City of Tomorrow

Way Back When #2

My comic character Fred Fortune first started appearing in North London Comics' small press anthology comic Mondo (Britain's Best Comic!) in the January 1993 issue and stayed there until Mondo went into it's extended hiatus after 60+ issues at the end of 2004. Mondo was unique among the UK small press comics of the time being one of the few titles that stuck to a regular monthly schedule and it was for the most part filled with light hearted action adventure superhero stories rather than the more introspective darker norm of the Brit small press at the time. It's creator/editor and lead writer Lee Davis often refers to it as the party on the page! Fred being a fast paced cartoony sci-fi comedy filled with flying car chases and a lot of beer set against the backdrop of a decaying post industrial future city fitted in well with Mondo's approach and became one of the regular strips.

So by 1994 I had accumulated enough Fred material to fill a few issues of my own so that summer Fred was collected into his own three issue mini series. Here are the covers for those issues.

Each comic was 20 black and white A5 pages behind a b+w cover copied onto coloured paper- standard practice in the small press back then. The small A5 page size meant that some of the artwork's impact was lost because it was mostly drawn on A3.

By 1994 Fred had evolved from one page gag strips to multi page and multi episode stories and the last story in this phase was the seven episode 'Daze' which introduced Fred's girlfriend Daisy. This story was collected as a one shot issue shortly before I went off to art college in 1995.

Originally a second three issue mini series would have been published at some point in 1996, but circumstances meant that it was put on hold and stories that would have appeared there remain unfinished (though the best ideas in those stories have been integrated into the new stuff, coming soon...). This is the cover for the second issue of that series- the cover for the first issue was drawn too, but has been lost in the mists of time. It's from late 1995 and all the lettering was hand drawn on the artwork.
Also in late 1995 Mondo morphed and relaunched as Equinox which lasted until Lee changed it back to Mondo in 1999.

While at college I took the opportunity to rework the design of the city giving it it's own distinct look and character, so it was not just another Blade Runner, Mega City One knock off.

These are a couple of the earliest sketches of the new look city. Inspired by the look of the huge industrial chemical plant that was near Middlesborough in the north east of England where I was at college I wanted the new look city to be different to the futuristic New York tower block trope, but also a bit more grounded than Carlos Ezquerra or Mick McMahon's amazing Mega City One designs in 2000AD. So I made my city's towers cylindrical with lots of pipes and walkways curling round them with lots of signage and floating streetlights.
The sketch above was later reworked and painted in acrylics to become one of the backgrounds in a very short Fred Fortune animation which might be coming to YouTube at some point, if I can make the time to finish the digital version.

Mondo is still around in the form of a Facebook page where you will find a lot of art and jokes. Some comics from it's pages have been restored and presented in colour for the first time so please feel free to check it out. Hopefully at some point we will be able to do a new printed edition...

Next time- The Hungry Shopper!

Stay safe everyone.

Meet The Cast #1

These cast profiles were originally in the issue #0 special preview issue of Fred Fortune (link to where you can buy it below) of the most recent series. #s 0-3 are available and issues 1-4 of Fred Fortune: Gold, a series that collects the really old strips from the early 1990s. Bear in mind that the stories that appear in 0-3 will be reworked and form part of the ongoing narrative that follows the forthcoming 'City of Tomorrow' story line, but if you don't mind spoilers please feel free. I'll be reworking most of them to fit the narrative. Also several of the stories in those issues were drawn by old Mondo* legend and all round good bloke Mr. John Woolley, who has since retired from drawing, so I will be drawing new art for all of them. This is by necessity rather than design because unfortunately I had a digital disaster a couple of years ago when the external hard drive that stored ALL of the Fred files decided to give up the ghost and break down on me and it was lost. I had one issue saved on Dropbox and a few low res back ups here and there, but not enough to continue as was originally planned. Luckily most of Fred was drawn traditionally so it has mostly been re-scanned... the oldest strips needing the most TLC to tidy up to a printable standard. Around 50 pages were lost completely, mostly ones that were digitally inked. Still have the traditional pencils though. A stupid mistake that won't be repeated. It feels like starting again from scratch so some jiggling of stories was required to get back on track. Mr Woolley will of course still be credited and will get a cheque for those stories if enough funds are raised.

*Mondo- The UK small press anthology comic where Fred was first published in 1993 which up to 2004. It still has a Facebook page here-

Here We Go- Welcome to Funky Punk Comics

First off I hope everyone is coping okay with the current unprecedented situation. Stay safe and spare a thought for key workers the world over at every level who are on the front line of the pandemic. We'll get through it and good health to all.

Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to have a look at the first post of the Funky Punk Comics blog which will be the new home for my Fred Fortune comic.

Fred is a fun loving free spirit of the future who likes nothing better than lots of beer, his friends, a good curry, lots of beer, his flying car and... ahem... lots of beer. He lives by his wits and is always getting into scrapes that he usually embraces with a cheery grin and a song in his heart. And there's car chases... lots and lots of car chases.

The story is set in roughly 1000 years time in the city of Imperium, nicknamed 'Shitty City'. The city was once the proud capital of Earth's Solar Empire, but after 500 years of galactic war it has fallen into disrepair and squalor, it's mile high towers long since past their prime and the lower levels are dark with a nasty dank whiff in the polluted air.

The first new Fred story, entitled 'City of Tomorrow', will be divided into three or four 40-50 page graphic novels that will  be crowdfunded. In the story the city is invaded and taken over by the mad evil pirate King Lord Tim Timminy-Tim-Timminy-Timtim-Terry (!)

So far the first forty or so pages are scripted, with the first twenty being pencilled and the first two are completed bar the lettering. I hope you'll join us as Fred's new chapter begins...

Here's a quick sequence from the Fred animation that was part of an old college project back in the 90s... It is a short two minute cartoon that was all done traditionally- hundreds of hand drawn acetate cells and eighteen painted backgrounds, filmed on high band video- it was done before digital animation. As I don't have a video copy that could be digitised I have scanned all the cells and backgrounds and will be remaking it digitally. As soon as it's done it will be posted on YouTube.

Next time- Meet the cast #1

Coming soon- Fred Fortune's secret origin and lots of other stuff...

Stay safe everyone.
