Mondominium #3!!

Here's a selection of old Mondo covers for you... This is the cover of the first issue I read by one A.Davies. I don't have copies of #s1-5 and Lee didn't keep any, so if anyone seeing this has those issues please drop us a line, we'd love them back in the Mondo archive. We'll scan them then get them straight back to you. Other missing issues are #s 8, 9 and 10, #33, and #37 of Mondo's first run.

The Christmas 1993 issue was Mondo's first colour cover and featured the epic death of British Bulldog story, aping DC's Death of Superman which was running at the time. This issue also came with a free gift, as a lot of UK comics did at the time to boost sales. Usually stickers, bubblegum or plastic space spinner toys, here we had free tissues for mourners to have a good cry at the loss of the fallen hero! Art by Nick Raybould.

Issue 25 (August 1994) was by the late Hadyn Walker marked the start of his and Lee Davis' post apocalyptic adventure strip 'Garrison's Blade'

Another Mondo legend made his debut in Issue 41 in 1999. Known for his very precise line work cartoonist BJ Wilson had been around the small press scene since the 80s. His 'Iron Ed' story was serialised and quickly became the comic's go to strip with it's very English take on the 70s Heavy Metal style.'Iron Ed' and BJ are Mondo MUST HAVES. If you use Kindle unlimited you can read 'Iron Ed' in all it's glory here-

It's follow up 'Assault Suit Kevin' would come later. Personally speaking I think BJs amazing artwork would benefit from some colour. Perhaps that French/Moebius/Asterix etc style... Watch this space if you'd like to see something like that...

Woolley Jumper #4

It's time to get out that knitting, poor a glass of sherry, sit back and enjoy our fourth outing of John Woolley's superhero parody with 'Pea-Brained Nuts' Part One, originally published in #14 of Mondo from September of 1993. It was a 40 page issue that also featured British Bulldog by Lee Davis and Paul Knight, Darkness by Mark Yarwood, Fred Fortune by myself, six pages (!!) of the legendary Mailbag From Hell!, a Superman article by Lee, a one off strip, Decisions, Decisions by Tom Murphy and myself, Part Two of Engine Man by Matt Banwell and Chris Doughty, another article by Lee- this time about newspaper strip Axa that ran in The Sun from 1978-1985, and the Private Hell of Negative Man also by Matt Banwell and Chris Doughty. It was all wrapped up with a fantastic cover by Tom Carney who could out-Bisley Simon Bisley! and a cut out and keep Danny Baker mask on the back! You can see the cover on Mondo's new Twitter here-

Mondo still has it's Facebook page where you will find 300+ of the Daily Doodles we used to do, lots of strips and a few articles.

... it's new Twitter page here-

... and now has new Facebook page, MondoToons to showcase Mondo's chief cheese, Lee Davis' own rampant lockdown cartooning-

Please check them out, thanks.

I couldn't resist it-

Next Time- More...

Meet The Cast #1

These cast profiles were originally in the issue #0 special preview issue of Fred Fortune (link to where you can buy it below) of the most recent series. #s 0-3 are available and issues 1-4 of Fred Fortune: Gold, a series that collects the really old strips from the early 1990s. Bear in mind that the stories that appear in 0-3 will be reworked and form part of the ongoing narrative that follows the forthcoming 'City of Tomorrow' story line, but if you don't mind spoilers please feel free. I'll be reworking most of them to fit the narrative. Also several of the stories in those issues were drawn by old Mondo* legend and all round good bloke Mr. John Woolley, who has since retired from drawing, so I will be drawing new art for all of them. This is by necessity rather than design because unfortunately I had a digital disaster a couple of years ago when the external hard drive that stored ALL of the Fred files decided to give up the ghost and break down on me and it was lost. I had one issue saved on Dropbox and a few low res back ups here and there, but not enough to continue as was originally planned. Luckily most of Fred was drawn traditionally so it has mostly been re-scanned... the oldest strips needing the most TLC to tidy up to a printable standard. Around 50 pages were lost completely, mostly ones that were digitally inked. Still have the traditional pencils though. A stupid mistake that won't be repeated. It feels like starting again from scratch so some jiggling of stories was required to get back on track. Mr Woolley will of course still be credited and will get a cheque for those stories if enough funds are raised.

*Mondo- The UK small press anthology comic where Fred was first published in 1993 which up to 2004. It still has a Facebook page here-

Next time- Meet the cast #2
