Brrmm Brrmm

This had got absolutely nothing to do with comics or art, but what the hell... As we all slip into some sort of Orwellian Bizarro world dystopia, while we still can, we just wanted to get something nice. So, after ten years faithful and reliable service it's time to say farewell to this dear old thing...

... and introduce this new beast!!

Check this out, still in demand on Indiegogo. Loving that artwork.
Mary Boys
Four teenage Knights Templar at the fag-end of the 20th Century, bringing in salvation the hard way.
Next Time- Reality Checked.

Stay safe everyone.

A Blast From Mondo's Past

Better buckle up for this ones folks, this is a big one, we've got nine pages of a future war comic to get through, hell yeah!!

As mentioned before North London Comics' zine Mondo, headed by it's creator Lee Davis, was a small press anthology comic that ran on and off from 1992 -2004. It was a fun positive mix of superhero, adventure and sci-fi comics and is oft referred as 'the party on the page'. It is still around as a Facebook page and plans are afoot to bring it back in print at some point.

A few years ago I had the idea of doing a series that would restore, colour and reprint some of Mondo's best stories as a fun Manga/digest sized print on demand series. We've got this great archive of stuff that hasn't been seen since it was first published and it deserves to be showcased at it's best. The series will be  will be called 'Mondo Minis' and will feature all the best Mondo stuff we've still got presented in colour for the first time. Given that, aside from my own stuff, the only material I have to work with are the old photocopied issues and I don't have copies of all the issues. It would be an uphill struggle, but I relish a challenge so over the course of a year or so I scanned all the pages I had and set about the task.

This then is the first showing of one of these classic stories. It is from Mondo #25, the Audust 1994 issue, and was always one of my faves from the time. I love the gritty art and atmosphere. It's a Viet Nam style future war ghost story that was written, drawn and lettered by Tim Chapman. I'm not in touch with Tim and haven't been able to find him after searching social media etc- so if he sees this or you know him please let him know or get in touch. I hope he likes what I've done with his work.

Below is a random page from the story that is as it was when I scanned it. As you can see it's got all the usual photocopy grain and loss of quality.

First I opened it in Clip Studio, adjusted the tone balance and contrast, then added new neater panel borders to straighten the page as a whole (the pages are all a bit wonky from the photocopy). From there it was just a question of tidying up all the line work, filling in solid black areas, and being careful not to lose Tim's art style in the process. I then re-lettered the whole story with a suitable font to give it some more consistency. I kept some of the graininess because I felt it added an atmospheric texture to the look of the art and it's hard to tell with the photocopied pages, whether Tim might have added it to his art for just that reason.

Here's what the page looked like at that stage-

From there I just had to add the colour. I'm not the best colourist digitally, I love painting traditionally, but haven't got the hang of painting on the computer yet, so, for this I have kept a simple jungle/military colour scheme of mostly green tones. Most of it is flat colour with some gradients in the backgrounds, but I'm quite pleased with how it turned out. I think it sets the mood of the story quite well.

So here it is in all it's glory... Funky Punk Comics and Mondo present for you Revenant by Tim Chapman. Hope you like it...
Let me know what you think in the comments. Would you like to see a Mondo Minis series?

Also, this is like searching for lost Doctor Who episodes, if anyone out there has some copies of Mondo... I'm missing #s1-5, 8-10, 33, 37 and 45-the Xmas 2004 issue. I'll scan them without destroying them and get them back to you ASAP with a free comic of some kind. Double also... if anyone has any copies of the other North London Comics titles- Equinox that ran from 1995-1999 and Union Jack from 1993 ( I have #s5-8). Thank you in advance.

Kreekraw And Kris: Must Be Destroyed- They never start a fight but they always finish it.

Digital Stuff & Nonsense Too

Like last time this one is a practise with digital colour only here instead of using watercolour brushes I've used a standard inking pen and the blending tool to smooth the edges. The results are just as good and it was fun to do, but I think I prefer using the watercolour brushes. They felt more 'real' and it seemed to be a faster process.

The next one a sketchbook page from around the turn of the millennium. It's a character design for a comic called 'Reality Check' which was going to feature a squad of 'Reality Police' in a world where fictional characters and monsters etc spill out into reality in a fun action comedy. I envisaged lots of dinosaurs, aliens and pirates invading modern day suburbia. I like the idea so I might revisit it at some point. I reckon I can get two or three graphic novels out of it!

Here's an old Fred one-pager from the heady days of 1991. The original art was drawn on A3 paper. This page has been tidied up and re-lettered digitally. I've tried not to correct all the obvious mistakes as it reflects my abilities of the time. The old Fred's could be collected again at some point, maybe as a one shot book or for free as a digital collection. What do you think? Would you like to read more old Fred online?

Just enough room to plug some cguk books. Check out Mortal Worlds by Double Vision Comics- A supersoldier discovers that man's first ancestor is our final descendant-a being of ultimate evil. Look at the art on the cover!

Here comes Phantom Volume 1 by Peephole Circus- Step into a dreamlike world of creepy characters and nightmares with the art book PHANTOM!

If zombies are your thing here's Doomsday Kingdom by LovePigeon A zombie story with heart and guts... lots of them! 128 PAGES!

Digital Stuff & Nonsense

Here's a quick digital painting that I did to learn the technique. It was done in Clip Studio with watercolour brushes and took roughly four hours to do. It's the first time I've used those brushes and I'm quite pleased with it. It's a steep learning curve and I'm more used to working in colour traditionally.

Next is a completed panel from Fred Fortune- City of Tomorrow. As you can see it's very dense, this isn't to visually overwhelm the reader but to reflect the intense claustrophobic nature of the future city. I think it's really effective and I'm loving doing it. For the eagle eyed amongst you in the background you will find R2D2, the Tardis and a Dalek. This one is part of the establishing scenes in the first couple of pages. Each panel is taking hours and hours to do with multiple layers and textures, greys and rain. At the time of this writing I'm doing the tone work on page 4, so it'll be a while yet before it's ready to go. Let me know what you think. I'll be posting regular updates etc so watch this space...

Just enough time to remind you that the Teespring and Redbubble stores have lots of nice Funky Punk stuff for you to enjoy so if you've got a spare few minutes to have a look I would really appreciate it. Links down below. Thanks.

Next Time- More stuff and nonsense!

Doodle of the Doctor #6

#RIPDrWho

I'm not as familiar with the Doctor's sixth incarnation as the others having never watched any of the sixth or seventh Doctor's adventures during their eras but have seen one or two stories since. I have heard some of their big finish audio adventures and Colin Baker's Doctor comes great... Just as with the fifth Doctor I'm gonna have to watch his two seasons and catch up with this version at some point. Just a shame that the sixth Doctor's costume looks so much better in the audio dramas!

The sketches below are all digital in Clip Studio. As I usually pencil my stuff traditionally I don't play with the digital pencil tools all that much. I'm quite pleased with the results but the shading pencil I used on this looks more like a marker pen to me. It's got the pencil texture- maybe it's how the tool handles tone on top of tone over and over again.

Next Time- We'll take a break from the Doctors for a bit, so it'll be something different. The Doctors will return soon.

Stay safe everyone.

Doodle of the Doctor #5

#RIPDrWho

Much like the first Doctor I found it harder to capture the likeness of Peter Davison's fifth Doctor... Must be something to do with the hair. It was under his tenure that I lost interest and dropped off the Who wagon as a kid. No disrespect to Peter Davison though, Tom Baker's fourth Doctor must have been an extremely hard act to follow. I'm going to have to watch  his run again at some point. Some of his stories I haven't seen since they were originally aired and some I've never seen. Any recommendations or should I just start at the beginning and plough through the lot? These are all sketches done traditionally in pencil and tidied up digitally. What do you think? Tegan needs work, but I'm quite pleased with the cyberman.

Should have drawn him playing cricket, maybe next time...
